2064: Taron joins Lian on Mars, but doesn't fit in and returns to Earth to be a soldier.
Taron finds life on Mars harder than he anticipated. Their lifestyle and beliefs are very different from what he was used to on Earth. Martians have genetic enhancements that make them stronger, faster and more versatile than an Earthling. He finds their silent wireless conversations unnerving; groups only resort to old-fashioned speech when they realize an Earthling is present. After a few months he decides that although he loves Lian very much, she and her environment have become too alien for him and he returns to Earth. Once back on Earth, he harbors resentment towards Martians for making it so hard for him to fit in, and blames them for his separation from Lian. Taron joins the military which is focused on preparing defenses against Mars, something he now firmly supports. Of course, he doesn't know what the real government plans are.
