The humanoid Heida explains that they're all real. Each mind is identical except for the slightly different memories that they've experienced in the last few minutes. If they choose, they can recombine back into a single entity and merge their memories, or decide to stay apart and live separate lives. After a while, Lian starts to grasp the power of digital life: immortality, speed of light travel, a choice of bodies, instant sharing of new knowledge.
